What does Creativity Mean to You?

This is my entry for the journal prompt: What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity is a lot of things to different people. For some it can be the ability to produce an object from what seems to be a pile of junk or scraps. It can also be the talent to think of a solution to a problem in the nick of time. Still for others it can be the dexterity of some people who made handicraft easier to do than what it really is.

For me, I think the highest form of creativity is writing. The ability to put into words the actions and thoughts that passes through people’s minds. To me a person who can do that is akin to a magician because through words they can transport the readers to different places from huge kingdoms with castles to a modernized version of the world where flying is the same as walking. More than traveling however a writer is a magician because he or she can manipulate reader’s feelings just by the words that they write. They can make the reader go through a roller coaster ride of emotions—to make them cry, laugh, smile, blush, fear—everything packaged in a simple hard bind collection of papers. They are capable of making people believe their views whether it’s about love, revenge, hurt, happiness, education or any other topic in this planet. They can weave a tale so believable that the reader can almost feel themselves transported to the world the author had created and literally forgets all their problems even if just for a while.

As far as I can remember I have been under the spell of these magicians for years now. Their captivating creations are the ones that cheered me up when I’m down, took my breath away when nobody in this real world could, move me to shed tears for characters I would have like to befriend because they felt so much real to me more than my real friends could.

I may be turning delusional, writing about creativity at first but ending up with my infinite love to the nonexistent world of fantasy. But as fleeting as the entertainment and sanctuary these books provide me, I will still favor them over the endless run of the mill gossiping my friends indulge in. After all in my book writing is not only the highest form of creativity. But also the highest form of intelligence especially given to a few selected individuals.
